Silicone: Strength, Flexibility, comfort for long-lasting protection


Silicone is a widely used material in a variety of industries due to its outstanding properties of strength, flexibility and durability. In respiratory protection, silicone plays a key role in improving the comfort and safety of operators, making masks more reliable and durable.

 

What is silicone?

Silicone is an inorganic polymer consisting of a chain of silicon and oxygen atoms, with side groups of carbon and hydrogen. This chemical composition makes it an extremely versatile material, combining the elastic properties of rubber with the thermal and chemical resistance typical of stiffer materials.

Unlike other synthetic elastomers, silicone does not undergo significant changes in the presence of high or low temperatures, maintaining its flexibility and structural integrity. For this reason, it is used in areas that require durable and safe materials, such as medical, aerospace and, of course, personal protective equipment (PPE).

What is the purpose of the silicone in BLS masks?

In BLS masks, silicone is primarily used to make face-contact components, such as the face seal and oronasal. These elements play a crucial role in ensuring a perfect fit of the mask andpreventing infiltration of contaminants.

For example, in the BLS 5000 b-lock (BLS 5700) and BLS 5000 universal (BLS 5400) series, the silicone oronasal wraps around the nose and mouth, creating an effective barrier against moisture and condensation. This reduces breathing resistance and provides a high degree of insulation, improving the overall performance of the device.

 

BLS's silicone masks are designed to provide maximum comfort even under prolonged use, avoiding the feeling of stiffness or irritation on the skin. Due to its softness and adaptability, silicone allows masks to conform better to facial features, reducing pressure points and providing a stable and secure fit.

What advantages does silicone offer?

The use of silicone in respiratory protective masks offers many advantages, including:

Silicone is highly resistant to weathering, including UV light, ozone and moisture. This makes it ideal for use in environments exposed to variable weather conditions or for workers working in open spaces. Also, unlike other plastic materials, it does not easily degrade under the action of sunlight or chemicals in the air.

2. Thermal stability

One of the main characteristics of silicone is its ability to maintain its shape and elastic properties even at extreme temperatures, both high and low. This makes it perfect for use in industrial environments where temperature changes or high heat exposure occur, ensuring reliable performance over time.

3. Water-repellent properties

Silicone is inherently water-repellent, which means it does not absorb water and resists moisture. This is especially useful in protective masks because it prevents condensation from forming inside the device, improving visibility and reducing the risk of bacteria buildup.

4. Ease of sanitization

Due to its resistance to high temperatures and cleaning chemicals, silicone can be easily sterilized without losing its properties. This makes it an ideal material for reusable devices, such as full-face masks, which need to be sanitized frequently to ensure maximum safety for the user.

5. Comfort and adaptability

One of the most appreciated aspects of silicone is its flexibility, which allows masks to better adapt to different facial conformations. This not only improves the seal of the mask, reducing the risk of seepage, but also increases comfort for the user, avoiding pressure marks or discomfort during prolonged use.
