How long do mask filters last?

Filter lifespan: everything you need to know

The lifespan of filters depends on many factors, but there are clear rules to follow to know when to replace them or how to store them.

One of the most common questions among workers using respiratory protective equipment is: how long does a mask filter last? The truth is that there is no universal value, as duration depends on several factors: the concentration of substances in the environment, the user’s breathing capacity, temperature, humidity, and the intensity of physical effort.

When to replace a filter in use

For particle filters, the rule is straightforward: when breathing resistance increases, it means the filter is clogged and must be replaced. For gas filters, on the other hand, the warning comes directly from your senses: if you detect the odor or taste of the substance you are exposed to, the filter should be changed immediately.

Can a filter be reused?

If a filter is not exhausted at the end of use, it can be stored and reused later. Proper storage means keeping it in a closed environment, away from UV rays, heat and humidity – for example, in a sealed bag. In these conditions, the filter can be reused within 6 months after being removed from its original packaging.

Filter shelf life in storage

When filters are not in use, their duration depends on the manufacturer’s specifications. For BLS filters:

  • particle filters have a 10-year shelf life;
  • gas and combined filters have a 5-year shelf life.

The expiration date is always clearly indicated both on the filter label and on its packaging.
