Fitting

Features that guarantee optimal fit

A good mask fit is essential to ensure protection and efficiency. Discover the main features of BLS FFP2 and FFP3 filtering masks, half-masks and full masks that guarantee an optimal fit.

Respiratory protection starts with the correct fit of the mask to the face. The fit is not just a question of comfort: it is the key to maximum safety. A well-fitting mask protects against particles, gases and harmful agents.

Why is a good fit essential?

An optimal fitting is what makes the difference between a device that truly protects and one that leaves you exposed to risk.

PPE masks are designed to create a barrier between the user and airborne contaminants such as particles, fine dust, aerosols or hazardous gases. If the mask does not fit tightly to the face, gaps are created through which contaminants can pass and the effectiveness of the filter/filter material is drastically reduced.

In industrial or healthcare environments, or where working with hazardous substances, an incorrect fit can put the user's health at risk. For example in situations with exposure to fine dust (such as asbestos), even the slightest leakage can have damaging effects over time.

A correct fit is also not only a question of protection, but also of comfort. If a mask is too tight or badly adjusted, it can be uncomfortable to wear for prolonged periods.

What lies behind the perfect fit?

A mask must be designed to fit the face naturally, reducing pressure points. This is achieved by a good product design that follows the anatomy of the face for a perfect fit and by adjustable elements such as the nose clip.

The inner nose clip on the BLS disposable filtering masks is placed internally between the layers of filtering material, adapts optimally to the contours of the nose and eyes and ensures good visibility and maximum compatibility with goggles.

Protection is only guaranteed if the mask adheres properly to the face, creating a barrier against particles and contaminants. A key feature of our products is in fact the gasket.

The gasket of the disposable masks is made of a new, soft technical foam, which allows an excellent fit on any face and guarantees a high degree of comfort in contact with the skin. That of the reusable masks, on the other hand, is made of silicone or thermoplastic rubber. Both materials are soft so as not to create discomfort during prolonged use and guarantee an effective seal even after many hours of work.

In addition, long-term mask wearers need comfort through even pressure distribution. The design of the BLS reusable masks avoids pressure points on the user's face, and the K-OMFORT system (featured in the BLS 5000 series) includes a 6-point harness that attaches directly to the rigid body of the mask so as not to deform the face seal and to even out the weight of the device.

Another key element are the elastic bands that guarantee comfort, convenience and a good fit on the face. Thanks also to the possibility of adjusting them and the innovative drop-off system, correct positioning of the facepiece is facilitated and the fit and pressure on the face are balanced.

As already mentioned, the design of the product must fit the anatomy of faces perfectly. However, every face is unique: shape, size and conformation can vary enormously. In fact, it has been found that it is rather unlikely that one size fits all facial profiles. This is why many BLS products are available in two sizes: size M/L fits most users, while size S is designed for thinner or smaller faces.

How do you determine whether the product fit is good?

A good fit is verified by means of fit tests, which allow the effectiveness of the PPE to be verified under real-life conditions.

The fit test is an evaluation that ensures that the device adheres correctly to the worker's face, avoiding infiltration of harmful agents. The fit test ensures that every worker receives the maximum possible protection, minimising risks.

Some of our masks perform particularly well in the fit test, such as the FFP3 BLS Zer0 32 filtering facepiece.
